Take advantage of last minute travel deals
(NC)—Longing to be on a beach? As the winter drags on, it can be tempting to look for last minute deals to a sunny destination. The key to a successful last minute trip is to be prepared. Stacie Pearson, Associate Vice President, TD Credit Cards, offers her top three tips on taking advantage of discount travel deals:
1. Is that the real price? – A vacation package might be advertised at a bargain basement price, but taxes and fees can come close to doubling the costs. Plus incidental costs like airport transfers or additional resort fees will quickly add up. Read the fine print before you buy and ensure you are prepared for the extras.
2. Be flexible – The key to taking the best advantage of last minute deals is being flexible with your travel dates. “Often travel companies advertise great discounts if travellers are prepared to leave mid–week,” says Pearson. “If your top priority is a low price, it can pay to pack a bag and wait until the last minute to book but you need to be flexible about both dates and destinations.”
3. Take advantage of travel rewards – Help offset the costs of your last–minute trip by using travel rewards points. “Make sure you aren't paying extra for travelling during certain times of the year – black–out days or restrictions can ruin your plans for a cost effective trip,” advises Pearson. Look for a travel rewards credit card that lets you pay for those travel extras, like airline baggage fees or taxes, with your travel rewards points. This can make a last minute deal truly affordable.
